Meggins-Don't hit the Street

One of my guy friends suggested I write a blog about, wait for it... "Meggins."To be honest at first, I wasn't sure if it was a joke?! Were men actually wearing (what amounts to an upgraded version of tights) in public?!Let's research. Going further back the "male legging" trend has been worn on the runway and by artsy/rockstar types for years. Could this be an actual trend that could gather steam with the mainstream male consumer?! My thinking is an enthusiastic,  "NO"! Yet oddly some of the experts are saying, yes. John Galiano and Givenenchy  feature the "Meggins" in their high fashion collection. It is unclear weather the designers think this trend will take off. Now this isn't a literal translation. They are featured underneath shorts or male skirts. Right... You could stop me right there. "Meggins are thought to be more of a "styling touch", to give your outfit more of a punch.   Still,... that reasoning doesn't work for me and more importantly has zero sex appeal.  I see an image of ballerinas dancing in my head! So, ...unless your Ethan Stiefel in Center Stage, I would refrain from wearing "Meggins".

Yet there are those in favor of the Meggins like Chicago's Adam Freck and Andrew Volk. Their online company featuring 15 different styles of "Meggins".  Freck and Volk are targeting a trendier consumer who wants to emphasize his physique, as well as being more comfortable while working out or dancing at clubs. I understand they can be great for active wear, but not worthy of wearing in public. I'd much rather see a guy in sweats or long basketball shorts. It was even suggested in an article I read that "Meggins" could be dressed up with a blazer?! That thought makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit... This is twilight zone material!

Our world is already too casual for my liking.  Plus, "Meggins" are way too tight, men aren't supposed to show off their legs that's a women's job, reversing the gender norms here, it totally unacceptable.  These guys in my mind look like jersey shore meat heads/grunge tools. It's okay to have a fitted pant, I prefer them...Its nice to see a man's shape, but not one that cuts off his circulation. And there is literally nothing left to the imagination. These pictures of Meggins are particularly hideous. Instead of following this bizarre trend, why not channel your inner Don Draper.  That's someone who will always be in style.

The Truth About Black

I never understood the inclinations to dress like everyone else. Why anyone would say BLACK is their favorite color, baffles me. Literally it is the absence of all color. It's dark, depressing and requires little thought. It represents evil and dark things. When I wear all black, it's simply because I have nothing else to wear and  has been drilled into my head that it is "chic". What it is, is bland.  The reality is I'm lazy and don't want to put any thought into what I'm wearing.  Now a sprinkling of  and white does work-it's classic, polished, and a great styling choice. You literally can't go wrong! Why companies would mandate people wearing all black I have no idea.  I get it's uniform and apparently "professional".  But not even that rings true to me. Today people don't understand what "business professional" means and wear unacceptable things to work. So as a punishment to people without any common sense, some companies mandate everyone wear black?! I don't get it! If you can't figure out what is appropriate to wear to work, you have issues.  Another problem is that black is also hot! There's nothing more annoying on a hot summer day then being in a car with the heat beating down on you! It's positively dangerous. Your wardrobe is a way to express yourself to the world. Companies are now stifling your creativity. A great outfit literally brightens my day, I am smiling from ear to ear and think I can take on anything! When you live in a climate that is cold and dark for a lot of the year, you need a little LIGHT in your life.

Another issue with black is everything shows up. If you have a pet- forget about it. It's a constant maintenance!Fur everywhere, tell me that's professional?!Not likely.

A bigger question also would be why ladies wear black to a wedding?! Black represents death or evil -- it's dark. Are you going to a concert, or are you going to a wedding?? Why don't you just wear black nail polish as well?! A wedding is supposed to be happy, a celebration of life. Say it with me people... IT'S A FORMAL OCCASION, why don't you just wear jeans?  Both are completely unacceptable, and a horrible fashion faux pas. Now there is one exception.  If the bride wants her bridesmaids all in black to make it easier for them and cut down on cost, it is completely acceptable.  It is her day. But, couldn't we counsel her out of this choice?

My favorite argument for wearing black is it is so slimming. For me it's the silhouette of the garment that slims us ladies. Ad guys made that up so naive girls spend more money. Its all about the bottom line no pun intended.

Now am I saying never wear black. NO! Every girl does need the LBD....ONE or TWO. Not 20... Actually, a LWD can be just as striking and more unexpected. If you have a black dress just mix in pops of color

Lets review: the truth about black is it's expected, it's hot, it hinders creativity, it's depressing, and it does not slim. Most importantly, LADIES do not wear it to a wedding, unless your prepared to be kicked out... by me!  Whether I have the authority to do so is another story. When in doubt just wear color, wear prints, make an actual statement! Bold fashion choices are way more fun and exude confidence. These ladies will not be denied!
